UbD Competency Based Instruction

Wiggins and McTighe’s (2005) UbD 1-Page Design Template was created for educators to use in the design of units that focus on understanding (p. 21-22). I have applied the first part of L. Dee Fink’s (2003) Learning Outcomes 3-Column Table, Integration, to the UbD 1-Page Design Template.

UbD’s template is more effective for designing smaller units of instruction with much greater detail. On the other hand, Fink’s 3-Column Table is much more effective for designing an entire course with a holistic learning perspective.

It was an interesting and eye-opening experience to have used Fink’s table to design my project-based plan first because I was able to see the bigger picture of what I wanted my students to accomplish. With UbD’s template, I was able to dig deeper into what part of my plan would look like. Now, all I must do is apply more of these UbD templates to complete my entire course plan.

See my Learning Outcomes 3-Column Table for my project-based plan here.

The Lemon Tree model is an impactful description of a journey to a career in an individuals life.
The roots represent values instilled from birth, usually by family. These keep the tree steady.
The trunk is the general education received as you navigate through grade school. The branches represent talents and paths for individualized careers. This is a conduit from Birth to Career.
The harvest is the fruits of your labor. Retrieve them in a negative light and you will be stuck with a sour product. If you add positivity, and excitement the Lemons turn into an enjoyable, useful item.
