Instructional Design

The Newaygo County Career- Tech Center serves high school juniors & seniors.  There are 15 programs designed to get students started in a career.

Implementation

The Construction Trades Program serves high school juniors & seniors.  There are typically 50-60 students per year in the class that is designed to get students started in a career in Construction.

Construction Trades is one of 15 programs in our Career-Tech Center and follows a particular order of business (listed below)  Students will have the opportunity to guide their own learning.  depending on their chosen path, students can earn many credentials along the way that will help them to obtain their desired career.

It has been quite a journey setting up the class in the online setting. I have been forced to learn Google classroom and have relied on the experts (my students)  to help me with the design.  Create, recreate, continue..  Im sure that moving into a full launch that there will be many more obstacles to overcome.  The assistance from my peers in the ADL program has been invaluable as well.  I have aspirations of creating more and making this a very usable go to for the students of the future.

Usability & Reflection

9 current Construction Trades students volunteered to work their way through the implemented modules.  Modifications were made based on reflections of these students.

Most students in our area are more familiar with google classroom than I am.  It was very beneficial to hear the critiques from them.  One of the students stated that some of the modules were the best put together assignments that they have ever seen.  Students comments led to the addition of introductory videos of me explaining, through screen sharing, how to complete the assigned work for the week.  Another student suggested that I create a google doc for easier submission of weekly assignments.  Finally, the connection between the LMS and google classroom was tainted so additional work was done to make the quizzes more user friendly by turning them into a google forms quiz.

In the end, we have developed a product that will enable our students to really take charge of their education by providing them with a clear path to travel.  I am excited to add to our classroom and deploy it at the beginning of the next schoolyear.  A special thanks goes out to the students who took on the task of helping to build the classroom exercises that they will come to know and love next schoolyear!
